Our Work camps are held every year in February, May, July, August, and October in Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan provinces. Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
JIA Work Camp Coordination Center (www.joyinaction.org) is a China-based NGO that was officially established in August 2004 to coordinate work camps in Chinese villages affected by Hansen?s Disease (leprosy). JIA stands for both joy in action and jia which means house in Chinese. In the 1950s and 60s, the Chinese government relocated people with leprosy to isolated mountain villages. Over 40 years later, more than 600 of these villages still exist. Even though many villagers have been cured through the multi-drug therapy treatment that became available in the 1980s, they are still not allowed back to their home villages because of existing stigma. HD-affected people today suffer especially from poor medical treatment, disabilities, poverty, and loneliness.

JIA aims to alleviate their suffering through hosting work camps in their villages. A work camp is typically 1-3 weeks long and has about 30 volunteers. Our main projects include setting-up a water supply, building toilets, fixing houses, teaching, and helping to care for the disabled villagers in their daily lives. Health care professionals would be especially useful in helping to access injuries that are a result of HD disabilities (including ulcers, infections, etc.), provide some basic care (disinfection, bandaging, etc.), or recommend further care. We strongly encourage our volunteers to get to know each other and the villagers by working, living, and eating beside them; by the end of a work camp, volunteers and villagers have developed cross-cultural, meaningful relationships. We have had volunteers from all over the world, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Guatemala, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea. (Work camps are only held in villages where villagers are all cured of leprosy and are not contagious to volunteers). Work camps are held every year in February, May, July, August, and October in Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hunan provinces. The total cost of a trip once a volunteer arrives at one of the departure areas in China--Kunming or Guangzhou--is under 100 US including transportation to the village, meals, and accommodation (most likely a roof and a sleeping bag).
